Blustery and cold with some more snow tonight; Snow showers linger along the South Shore Friday, some sun in northern MN; Storm Potential mid to late next week

Snowflakes falling, winds blowing, tornado sirens blaring, must be severe weather awareness week in the Northland!

A strong spring storm continues to affect much of northeast Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin today, and now that we’re firmly on the back side of this system the precipitation that has fallen today has been in the form of snow due to a colder air mass on a gusty northerly wind.

Note: Storm Total Precipitation at Duluth from April 5 through 4 PM April 7, 1.22″ with a snowfall total of 6.3″.

Snow continues along the South Shore in northwest Wisconsin tonight into Friday morning with lingering snow or a mix of rain/snow showers Friday afternoon. Additional snowfall accumulations of 2 to 5 inches with higher amounts are likely along the South Shore through Friday morning.

Widespread light snow will continue across northeast Minnesota this evening followed by flurries and scattered snow showers overnight through early Friday morning. Additional snowfall accumulations in northeast Minnesota including in Duluth will range from a trace to 2 inches.

A look at our spring storm via Goes-16 visible satellite loop from Thursday, April 7, 2022.

A tight pressure gradient between an area of low to our SE and high pressure to our NW will continue to produce gusty winds in the Northland tonight and Friday.

Center of a mid/upper-level area of low pressure has moved into central parts of Wisconsin this afternoon and this low will continue to move slowly SE through Friday.

Temperatures were only in the upper 20s to lower 30s in northeast Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin late this afternoon.

Normal highs in the Northland on April 7 are in the middle 40s to lower 50s.

Expect a continuation of gusty northerly winds through Friday with wind gusts of 20 to 35 mph across the Northland. Wind speeds/gusts will finally diminish this weekend.

High temperatures will finally get back to where they should be this time of year with highs on Saturday in the mid 40s to around 50 degrees in the Northland, but Friday will still be on the cool side with highs generally in the middle 30s to lower 40s.

Next week is looking pretty stormy once again with a major storm possibly ejecting NE out of the Rockies or Plains sometime around April 12-15.

A powerful winter storm (possible blizzard) on the colder side or NW side of a surface low next week, while severe thunderstorms including a risk for some tornadoes will be possible in the warmer air SE of the surface low across parts of the Central and Southern Plains next week.

The storm track, intensity of the low and timing of this system will likely change the next few days, but as of Thursday afternoon it looked like this system could affect northeast Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin the middle to end of next week (April 13-15 time frame) per model data.

Darker blue and purple colors on the loop below indicate a very strong trough, very low 500mb heights with a potential for stormy weather. Stay tuned!
