Severe Thunderstorm Watch issued for parts of the Northland

A Severe Thunderstorm Watch has been issued for parts of central and west-central Minnesota and northeast South Dakota until 1 AM tonight. Some cities in the Northland included in this watch are Cass Lake, Walker, Backus, Remer, Longville, Leader, Pillager, Brainerd, Nisswa, Pine Center, Garrison, Aitkin, McGregor, McGrath and Hill City.

Primary severe weather threats include

-Damaging Winds to 60 mph with isolated significant wind gusts to 75 mph possible.

-Large Hail to 1 inch in diameter (quarter size) with isolated very large hail events to 2 inches in diameter (hen egg size) possible.

Scattered strong to severe thunderstorms are developing late this afternoon over parts of central Minnesota. Movement of those storms is generally toward the east or east-northeast.

Here’s the latest HRRR model (22z/5 PM) simulated radar forecast through 4 AM Friday.

Anywhere from 0.10″ to an inch of rain is possible tonight over parts of east-central and northeast Minnesota with lesser amounts of rain expected in parts of northwest Wisconsin.

Note: Locally higher rainfall amounts are possible in east-central Minnesota tonight especially if multiple rounds of thunderstorms occur.
