Snow continues tonight and Wednesday (heaviest along the North Shore) Cold through early next week; Milder temperatures possible mid-late next week

5:50 PM Tuesday, November 15, 2022

Our long duration snow event will continue across much of the Northland tonight with some snow still lingering in parts of the area on Wednesday.

The heaviest snowfall will continue to be focused along the North Shore of Lake Superior tonight through Wednesday morning as a favorable setup for lake enhanced snow remains in place, but this setup will become less favorable during the day Wednesday.

Snowfall rates in the rest of the Northland should remain on the light side tonight and Wednesday, but there could be a few bursts of somewhat heavier snowfall at times similar to what has occurred in the Twin Ports over the last 18 hours or so, and this is when we’ve picked up a lot of our snow when those bursts of heavier snowfall develop, in fact we’ve seen anywhere from 3 to 6 inches of snow in Duluth since Monday morning.

Snow (blue colors)

Additional snowfall accumulations for tonight through Wednesday will range from 3 to 6 inches along the North Shore of Lake Superior to about 1 to 3 inches in Duluth. An inch or less of additional snow is expected in the rest of the Northland.

Seeing a few areas of strong convergence this afternoon.

1 – Right along a surface trough (wind shift boundary) which extends from west-central to southern Minnesota late today

2 – Near Lake Superior (North Shore/Arrowhead areas)

3 – Near Lake Michigan

A broad upper-level trough stretching from central Canada to the upper Midwest and Great Lakes today will remain in place over the next few days.

A pretty chaotic pattern in place right now.

A cold pattern continues in the Northland through early next week with the coldest temperatures compared to average occurring this weekend with daytime highs in the teens to lower 20s, with lows in the single digits below to single digits above zero.

There continues to be signs showing up in the long-range models for milder temperatures to return to the Northland mid to late next week with a chance that high temperatures climb toward 40 degrees mid to late next week.
