Much cooler temperatures along with strong northeast winds are on the way near Lake Superior for Thursday and Friday with highs both days ranging from the upper 30s to middle 40s within about 15-20 miles of Lake Superior. Northeast winds will also increase with gusts of 25 to 35 mph likely on Thursday.

Temperatures will remain much warmer inland from Lake Superior with highs Thursday in the mid 60s to mid 70s in far southern parts of the area, from Brainerd to Hinckley to Hayward with 50s and lower 60s across northern Minnesota. Then, on Friday highs will range from the 60s to the middle 70s for locations far enough away from Lake Superior.

Much cooler temperatures will impact the entire Northland this weekend into early next week with highs Sunday and Monday only in the 30s to lower 40s, while sub-freezing low temperatures make a return late this weekend into early next week, with temperatures at night possibly falling into the teens for some, 20s for others.

A cold front moving SSE through the Northland tonight will stall out across central Minnesota on Thursday and this front will be the focal point for possible shower and thunderstorm development north of this front across portions of northern Minnesota on Thursday. Heavy downpours and some lightning look to be the main hazards from the storms Thursday with no severe weather expected.

Here’s the 18z NAM 3km model radar forecast valid from 7 AM Thursday to 7 PM Thursday.

Rain chances will be highest across northern Minnesota Thursday and Friday with rain chances not increasing until either Friday night or during the day Saturday for eastern Minnesota, Twin Ports and in northwest Wisconsin.

The potential for widespread precipitation totals of around a half inch exists in the Northland through Sunday evening, and some of this precip could take the form of snow Saturday night into Sunday but no significant snow accumulations are expected the way it looks now.

There were 90 degree temperatures in southern Minnesota this afternoon, with New Ulm, Owatonna, Red Wing and Winona all reporting a temperature of 90 degrees at 5 PM today.

Lower 80 as far north as Siren and Hayward in northwest Wisconsin this afternoon, with middle 70s from Moose Lake to Superior, south to Solon Springs, east to Ashland.

New record high temperature set at Minneapolis today with a high of 88 degrees, this broke the previous record high for April 12th of 83 degrees set in 1931.

International Falls tied its record high for today’s date (April 12) of 71 degrees, this record was set in 1918.

Nemadji River near Superior – Flood Warning in effect until 4 PM Saturday.

The stage was 21.9 feet as of 3 PM Wednesday. Flood stage is 23.5 feet. The river is expected to rise to around 25 feet by Thursday afternoon.

At 28.0 feet: Ice or debris may jam at bridge. Backwater flooding may flood home west of river on County C. In 2018 water flowed over US Highway 2 in Superior at this level.

At 26.0 feet: Water encroaches house west of Nemadji River on County C.

At 23.5 feet: Water level is near bottom of County Highway C bridge deck. Large area of backwater develops upstream of bridge. Debris jamming under bridge is possible at this level.

At 22.1 feet: Water begins flowing over Bardon Ave/Woodlawn Rd. between Golf View Dr. and N 42nd St.

A closer look at the Flood Warning in effect on the Nemadji River affecting portions of Douglas County Wisconsin.

Tyler Forks River near Mellen – Flood Warning now in effect until early Tuesday morning.

Moderate flooding is occurring, and major flooding is forecast. This approaches the flood of record.

The stage was 11.3 feet as of 5:30 PM Wednesday. Flood stage is 9.0 feet. Record flood stage is 14.2 feet which was set June 16, 2018.

The river is expected to rise to a crest of near 12.5 feet Friday morning. It will then fall below flood stage Monday afternoon.

St. Croix River near Danbury – Flood Warning in effect from Thursday evening to late Sunday evening.

Minor flooding is forecast.

The stage was 5.1 feet as of 4 PM Wednesday. Flood stage is 7 feet. The river is expected to rise above flood stage late tomorrow evening to a crest of 7.6 feet Friday evening. It will then fall below flood stage Sunday afternoon.

St. Louis River at Scanlon – Flood Watch now in effect from Saturday afternoon until further notice.

The stage was 7.5 feet as of 4:30 PM Wednesday. Flood stage is 10.5 feet. Flood stage may be reached by Saturday afternoon.

At 10.5 feet: Minor flooding occurs near Scanlon.

Flood Warning for snowmelt in effect until 4 PM Friday for a portion of northwest Wisconsin including Bayfield County.

Flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations is imminent or occurring.

At 8:05 PM, local law enforcement reported flooding in the warned area. There are several road closures in the warned area, including US Highway 63 north of Grand View.

Some locations that will experience flooding include, Ashland, Iron River, Drummond, Benoit, Ino, Town of Delta, Mason, Grand View and Moquah.
