Rain chances return Wednesday night; Turning colder with some flurries this weekend; Chilly pattern lingers into next week

Most of the Northland should stay dry tonight and through much of the day Wednesday, but rain chances will be on the increase Wednesday evening/overnight, lingering through early Friday morning before precipitation chances diminish Friday afternoon.

Temperatures will remain warm enough for precipitation to fall as rain Wednesday night and Thursday, but colder air will be moving into far northern Minnesota late Thursday night-Friday morning which will cause the rain to change to a wintry mix or even snow for a time before precipitation diminishes during the day Friday. Note — The chances for some wintry precipitation are highest roughly north of a line from around Northome to Crane Lake including the International Falls area in far northern Minnesota.

Colder air moves in area-wide Friday with highs by this weekend into the middle of next week in the 30s in northeast Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin with some locations up north possibly struggling to even hit 30 degrees on a few days between this weekend and the middle of next week. Overnight temperatures will drop into the 20s with even some 10s possible.

A split in where the greatest precipitation totals will be found continues through Friday, with the highest amounts forecast to be northwest and southeast of Duluth with a bit of a minimum in precipitation totals in between.

Note — It still doesn’t look like will be seeing any snow in Duluth through Friday afternoon, but there are chances for scattered flurries and snow showers this weekend, but very little snow accumulation is expected the way it looks now.

Cold air continues to expand across Canada and northern Rockies today, but it’ll take a few more days before this cold air reaches the Northland.

A large temperature contrast from northwest to southeast today, with teens and 20s in Alberta and Saskatchewan Canada into parts of Montana, with 70s and even some 80s in parts of Iowa and Illinois. The cold air will be on the move the next few days as it spreads farther south/east reaching the Northland by Friday, but far northern Minnesota will begin to feel this colder air by Thursday.

In between the much colder air to the northwest and warmer air to the south, we’ve been seeing clusters of showers and thunderstorms today from south central Minnesota into central Wisconsin.

Snowing in parts of Montana late this afternoon with rain and thunderstorms occurring from southern Minnesota to central Wisconsin into parts of upper Michigan and far northern lower Michigan.

Storms from south central Minnesota into central Wisconsin today have been producing lots of lightning and heavy rain along with some hail ranging from quarter size to golf ball size in some locations.

We’ve seen some heavy rainfall totals today from parts of southern Minnesota to central Wisconsin with radar estimating anywhere from 0.50 inches to over 2 inches of rain (blue and purple colors on the map) over the past 12 hours ending 5 PM today.
