No colder than average days so far this month in Duluth. 94% of days have been warmer than average.

Average temperatures so far this month are already running ahead of the warmest December on record (see below) at Ashland, Brainerd, Hibbing and International Falls, so will see how things trend over the next few weeks, but based off the long-range computer models, I don’t think will be seeing much of a change in this mild temperature pattern for the rest of this month. The best we can do in this type of pattern is for quick 1-day shots of colder temperatures.

Warmest December on record

Duluth: 32.7 degrees set in 1877
Ashland: 30.0 degrees set in 2015
Brainerd: 26.6 degrees set in 1913
Hibbing: 24.7 degrees set in 1939
International Falls: 22.8 degrees set in 1913

Average temperatures so far for December 2023 (thru the 16th)

Duluth: 29.2 degrees (+9.7 degrees above normal)
Ashland: 32.4 degrees (+9.9 degrees above normal)
Brainerd: 28.8 degrees (+9.4 degrees above normal)
Hibbing: 25.8 degrees (+11.1 degrees above normal)
International Falls: 27.3 degrees (+12.6 degrees above normal)

No surprise here, it’s been a very mild December across the northern Plains and upper Midwest.

It will be a blustery and chilly day in the Northland on Monday with highs in the upper teens to middle 20s which is near normal to as much as -5 degrees below normal for this time of year.

Overnight temps tonight and Monday night will be in the single digits and teens with milder overnight temperatures returning mid to late week.

Here are the normal highs for December 18th

Ashland: 27
Brainerd: 25
Duluth: 24
Hibbing: 21
International Falls: 20

More above average temperatures ahead in the Northland after Monday’s rare shot of cold air.
