Scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected to persist across parts of east central Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin this evening, with the rainfall anticipated to taper off later tonight.
Drier conditions are anticipated in the Northland on Wednesday, with the possibility of a few showers, although they are expected to be less widespread than those experienced today.
HRRR model simulated radar forecast through 7 PM Wednesday.
Continued scattered heavy showers are expected into the evening, primarily affecting east central Minnesota and parts of northwest Wisconsin. Additional rainfall is anticipated to range from a tenth to half an inch, with localized areas potentially receiving an inch or more.
A potent low-pressure system near Bismarck, ND, later today will move south-southeast, arriving in Iowa on Wednesday. As the low travels south of the Northland, it will sustain a chilly and brisk northeast wind around Lake Superior until Thursday.
The storm system today is indeed impressive, stretching from southwest Canada and the northern Rockies all the way to the upper Midwest, Great Lakes, and Ohio Valley region. Its vast reach is a testament to the dynamic nature of weather patterns.

This is another view of the storm captured by the GOES-16 visible satellite imagery. The loop concludes at 4 PM CT on Tuesday, May 7, 2024.
Later this week, a shift in weather patterns is expected, with a northwest flow developing aloft in the upper Midwest. Within this flow, a few systems from central Canada will descend southward and eastward. The initial system is forecasted to pass over the Northland on Friday, likely bringing scattered showers to the region.
Away from Lake Superior, temperatures this afternoon ranged from the mid-50s to mid-60s, while areas near the lake experienced temperatures in the 40s.
A comparable temperature trend is expected for Wednesday and likely for Thursday as well.
