Several thunderstorms, some quite intense, emerged over the Northland this afternoon due to an upper-level trough and colder temperatures aloft, with 500mb temperatures dropping to -20 to -21C. Lapse rates also increased to approximately 7.0-8.0 C/km. These conditions, coupled with warmer surface temperatures, led to heightened instability and the development of scattered thunderstorms. Some storms produced small hail, measuring between 0.25 inch and 0.75 inch, accompanied by gusty winds reaching up to 50 mph.

• 1:09 PM: Hail 0.70 inch. 2 W Spring Lake, MN (Itasca County). Up to dime size hail nearly covering the ground. Last about 10 minutes in duration.

Today’s rainfall patterns were more dispersed than yesterday’s, yet there were still areas of intense rainfall in parts of northeast and east central Minnesota, as well as northwest Wisconsin this afternoon. However, the heavy rain was more localized than the widespread rain experienced yesterday.
