Local Storm and Rainfall Reports from June 12, 2024

A severe thunderstorm outbreak affected areas of northeast, north central, and east central Minnesota late Wednesday afternoon into the early evening. The main threat from today’s storms was large hail, with many reports of hailstones measuring between 1.00 inch and 2.50 inches, or the size of quarters to tennis balls, with at least one report of baseball sized hail (2.75-inch diameter)

Further storm reports are expected to be received by the National Weather Service office in Duluth within the next 12 hours or so, and updates will be made to this post to include any new information provided to the NWS.

Additionally, at least a few tornadoes were reported late Wednesday afternoon and early evening across parts of Crow Wing and Aitkin Counties in east central Minnesota. Confirmation of these reports will be pending from the National Weather Service.

This is a GOES-16 sandwich satellite loop depicting the outbreak of multiple supercell thunderstorms across central to northeast Minnesota late on Wednesday afternoon.

The loop time extends from 4:16 PM to 6:11 PM on Wednesday.

The tracks of individual supercell storms that moved southeast across parts of the Northland late Wednesday afternoon are evident by the areas of higher rainfall totals (indicated by blue and purple colors on the map below), with radar rainfall estimates reaching 1 to 3 inches in localized areas.
