Weather Forecast: Warmth and some Rain for the Northland

6:27 PM Sunday, June 1, 2025

Significant warmth is present today due to an upper-level ridge positioned over the northern Plains. Temperatures near this ridge range from the middle 80s to lower 90s, while mid-70s to lower 80s are prevalent farther east in northeast Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin. However, an onshore wind has maintained cooler temperatures in the 50s near Lake Superior.

As this ridge shifts eastward, the warmest temperatures are expected to reach the mid-80s to around 90 in the Northland on Monday. However, the extent of the warming may be influenced by smoke, as it could be dense enough to obscure the sun for much of the day.

Expect windier conditions on Monday with S-SW winds gusting 15 to 25 mph.

Although dew points are expected to increase on Monday, conditions do not appear particularly humid, as dew points will only range from the 50s to around 60 degrees across the Northland.

A cold front will move through the Northland Monday night and exit to the east on Tuesday. This front is expected to bring some rain to northeast Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin from Monday evening to Tuesday morning, along with a few thunderstorms, especially late Monday afternoon and evening.

Rain chances will diminish on Tuesday in northeast Minnesota, though additional rainfall is anticipated in parts of northwest Wisconsin.

Duluth area: The likelihood of rain will increase Monday night, particularly after 7 PM.

Note: Isolated strong to severe thunderstorms may occur late Monday afternoon and evening, primarily over north-central Minnesota, with potential threats including gusty winds and hail. However, the overall environment appears unfavorable for intense convection due to poor lapse rates and generally low to moderate levels of instability and moisture. While winds aloft are strong, other necessary ingredients do not align to support a more substantial severe weather threat on Monday.

North-central areas of Minnesota seem to have the highest likelihood of experiencing greater rainfall totals (outlined in black) with this system, with amounts ranging from half an inch to an inch or more. Additionally, parts of northwest Wisconsin may also see higher rainfall amounts.

Between the two areas with potential for higher rain totals, including the Duluth area, precipitation amounts appear to be relatively light, generally ranging from 0.05 to 0.25 inches.

Widespread smoke is continuing to drift southeastward across the Upper Midwest today, with similar conditions expected to persist into Tuesday morning. However, some improvement may occur by Tuesday afternoon.

Some smoke will reach the ground at times through Tuesday morning, causing a smoke smell. Otherwise, expect hazy skies with little sunlight.
