More rain in the forecast

After a break from the rain this afternoon and much of Saturday, showers are expected to make a comeback in parts of the Northland Saturday night into Sunday as a cold front moves east from western Minnesota. The front is expected to stall from southern Minnesota through northwest Wisconsin to Minnesota’s Arrowhead Saturday night into Sunday before shifting west again with a low-pressure system approaching from the southwest on Monday.

Round 1 of 2 is set to bring 0.1 to 0.25 inches of rain to parts of the Northland Saturday night into Sunday, with much less rain northwest and southeast of the main corridor.

The second round of rain, expected to be much more widespread, could bring anywhere from half an inch to over an inch of rainfall to northeast Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin from Monday through early Tuesday morning.

The second round of rain early next week comes from a larger system moving northeast out of the central Plains. With a strong trough pushing north through the upper Midwest, this system should bring more lift and lead to a widespread soaking rain across the Northland on Monday. Plus, as the surface low passes to the south, expect breezy northeast winds near Lake Superior, with gusts of 15-30 mph from Sunday night into Monday.

Duluth: Mostly dry Saturday with rain possible at times Saturday night into Sunday, followed by a rainy, breezy Monday.
