Today, the Northland saw scattered showers and thunderstorms, featuring hail from quarter- to half-dollar size, isolated funnel clouds, and localized wind damage in Duluth’s Morgan Park area.

-Duluth reached a high of 80 degrees today, making it the third day this month with temperatures of 80 or higher. Typically, August sees seven days with highs at or above 80 degrees.

-Today, August 25, 2026, Duluth Airport recorded 0.51 inches of rain—the first time since July 31 that half an inch or more has fallen, when 2.41 inches were measured.

Today’s rainfall in the Northland resulted from an eastward-moving cold front combined with a strong upper-level trough approaching from the northwest.

Here’s a look at this afternoon and early evening’s radar loop, illustrating the movement of scattered showers and thunderstorms across northeast Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin.

These storms passed through the Twin Ports area between approximately 5:30 and 6:00 PM today.

A microburst or downburst likely occurred in the Gary New Duluth area just before 6 PM today, with radar estimating winds of 50 to over 60 mph for a brief period of 2 to 3 minutes, affecting areas from near Becks Road to Commonwealth Avenue and surrounding neighborhoods.

A look at the GOES-19 infrared satellite loop from Tuesday, August 25, 2026, covering 2:15 PM to 8:10 PM CT. The green and yellow areas indicate cloud top temperatures ranging from approximately -50°C to -58°C.

This was a relatively small but potent system that affected the Northland today. The upper trough associated with it will continue to bring occasional showers tonight and into Wednesday.
