There was a notable rainfall gradient across the Twin Ports last night, with several rounds of showers and thunderstorms producing brief, intense downpours in parts of Duluth.
Rainfall varied across the region, with totals ranging from about 0.4 inches to over an inch at the Duluth Airport and Hermantown. Other parts of Duluth experienced similar amounts, while Duluth Sky Harbor Airport recorded less than 0.1 inches as the heaviest storms passed just northwest of that location.
There’s definitely been an increase in significant rain events in Duluth as we close out August, with three days since August 25th recording a quarter inch or more of rain, and two of those exceeding half an inch. Whether this wetter pattern will continue into the fall remains to be seen.
The first round of thunderstorms passed through Duluth between 11 PM and midnight last night, followed by a second round around 4 AM this morning.
