Breezy and cool NE wind near Lake Superior Thursday; Windy and colder this weekend with a few snow showers; Active pattern possible late next week through the end of the month

A stronger northeast wind is likely near Lake Superior on Thursday which will help keep temperatures in the 30s to around 40 degrees in the Twin Ports, while the rest of the Northland will be in the 40s to around 50 degrees.

Friday’s highs will be in the 40s to around 50 with increasing southwest winds which will shift to the northwest late Friday night-Saturday. Wind gusts around 20 to 35 mph are possible across the Northland Friday evening into Saturday.

A clipper system will pass north of our area Friday-early Saturday. A few snow or rain showers will be possible in parts of the Northland as this system moves through the area Friday into early Saturday with lingering flurries and snow showers from time to time this weekend as colder temperatures move in.

Lake effect snow machine kicks on Sunday into early Monday along the South Shore of Lake Superior in northwest Wisconsin especially east of the Ashland area where snow accumulations of 1 to 3 inches will be possible late this weekend.

Trace to 1 inch of snow for far northern Minnesota on Saturday with 1 to 3 inches of snow possible east of Ashland in northwest Wisconsin Sunday-early Monday.

Potential is still there for a more active weather pattern beginning sometime late next week through the end of March, but this could certainly change given the track record of the computer models in the long range over the last few months.

36/50 EPS members forecast 4 inches or more of snow in Duluth over about the next 2 weeks with the bulk of that occurring around or after March 22nd.

There’s 14/50 EPS members forecasting 10″+ snow totals in Duluth, with 3 of those members forecasting 20″+ snow totals through March 28th.

Cooler temperatures arrived in far northern Minnesota near the Ontario border today with temperatures in the upper 30s to lower 40s this afternoon, but mild temperatures continued across the rest of the area with temperatures in the 50s to around 60 in east central Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin with 60s in central/southern Minnesota into central/southern Wisconsin.

Here’s a look at the 24-hour temperature change from 4 PM Tuesday to 4 PM today.

The largest temperature drop compared to 24 hours ago were in far northern Minnesota and also near Lake Superior (outlined in black on the map)

Below average temperatures have been few and far between in Duluth this winter.
