August 2024 Rainfall Data: Northland Region

Monday’s post discussed August’s temperature data, while today’s post will concentrate on rainfall data.

The Northland region has received between 1 to 2 inches of rain this month, while the far northern areas of Minnesota have recorded less than 1 inch of rainfall.

Total rainfall for August 2024 through 4 PM on the 20th

  • Duluth, MN: 2.53″
  • Hibbing, MN: 2.44″
  • Brainerd, MN: 2.07″
  • Ashland, WI: 1.46″
  • International Falls, MN: 0.67″

Far northern Minnesota and parts of far northern Wisconsin have received about an inch or more below the normal rainfall this month, whereas the rest of the Northland has experienced near-normal to approximately a half-inch above normal rainfall levels.

  • Hibbing: +0.49″ above normal
  • Duluth: +0.14″ above normal
  • Brainerd: +0.05″ above normal
  • Ashland: -0.84″ below normal
  • International Falls, MN: -1.11″ below normal

  • Hibbing: 125% of normal
  • Duluth: 106% of normal
  • Brainerd: 103% of normal
  • Ashland: 64% of normal
  • International Falls: 37% of normal

The map below indicates above-average rainfall in areas marked with green and blue, while regions in yellow and orange depict below-average rainfall.

Note: Totals below are since June 1st

Embarrass: 12.55″, +2.42″ above normal

Brainerd: 12.19″, +1.89″ above normal

Duluth: 11.59″, +0.89″ above normal

Hibbing: 10.89″, +0.23″ above normal

International Falls: 8.91″, -0.62″ below normal

Between June 1st and August 20th, Duluth recorded at least 0.01 inches of rain on 35 days, with no rainfall on the other 35 days.

The upcoming days are expected to be predominantly dry in the Northland, with the possibility of some showers and isolated thunderstorms later in the week, particularly around Thursday and early Friday morning.
