Lower 50s in Duluth today will drop to the lower 30s for highs on Monday as a quick shot of late-season cold air moves over the Northland. Note: Today’s high of 50 in Duluth was the 1st 50° temperature this month. The average number of 50-degree days in April is 11 days; the most was in 2010, with 27 days at or above 50°.
Along with this cold air will come a period of lake-effect snow late tonight into Monday morning along the South Shore of Lake Superior in northeast Wisconsin and upper Michigan where a winter weather advisory is in effect.

Snowfall of 1 to 4 inches is expected by noon Monday in northeast Wisconsin southeast of Ashland, with some areas in upper Michigan near Lake Superior possibly receiving up to 6 inches.

This will be a very cold airmass for this time of year, with 850mb temperatures dropping to around -12 to -20°C in the Northland. However, any sunshine on Monday will make it feel warmer (especially in the afternoon) than the actual temperature, as the sun in April is much stronger than it was in February.

Temperatures early Monday morning are expected to fall to the teens and around 20 degrees in northeast Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin, while normal lows for early April are usually in the lower to upper 20s in this area.

Normal highs on April 7th in the Northland are usually in the 40s to around 50, but on Monday, we will see highs from the upper 20s to middle 30s.

Tuesday morning will be the coldest, with temperatures around zero to 15 degrees in northeast Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin.

A clipper-type system could bring a little precipitation (rain/snow) to parts of the Northland this week in the Wednesday-Thursday time frame, but this does not look like a big system right now.
As we get into late next weekend and into the following week, the pattern may turn more active and favorable for stronger systems to move out of the Rockies, so that will be something to keep an eye on this week to see if the computer models continue with these trends. Stay tuned.
