Rain chances are expected to return periodically this weekend and continue into much of next week.
The first opportunity for rain is forecasted for Saturday afternoon, continuing into Sunday morning. This rainfall is expected to be associated with a disturbance moving northeast from the northern Plains.
A warmer, more humid, and unstable air mass is expected to develop across much of the Northland on Sunday due to the movement of a warm front and cold front through the region. There is a possibility of a few showers and thunderstorms developing in our area Sunday afternoon into the night. However, there is a higher likelihood of showers and thunderstorms on the following Monday and Tuesday. Northern Minnesota may experience heavy or excessive rainfall, which could result in flooding issues at the start of next week.
Next week’s forecast indicates a strengthening upper-level ridge (heat dome) over the Ohio Valley, accompanied by a trough to the west. This setup will place the upper Midwest under an active southwesterly flow.
An expected wet pattern over the coming two weeks suggests widespread rainfall, with ensemble models predicting totals between 2 to 4 inches through June 28th.
The most extreme heat is expected to remain southeast of our area next week. In the Northland, temperatures are forecasted to be near or just above average, suggesting that we will predominantly experience highs in the 70s and lows in the 50s.
The forecast suggests increasing humidity by Sunday with dew points rising into the 60s. This humid air mass is expected to persist at least until next Tuesday.
This afternoon, northeast Minnesota and far northwest Wisconsin have experienced scattered showers and a few thunderstorms moving southeast. The primary hazards from these storms have been brief, heavy downpours and gusty winds reaching up to 40 mph.
