Northland Weather Update: Rainfall and Temperature Trends

Some areas of the Northland experienced some rain today. However, as these showers approached Lake Superior, the cold and stable air from the lake caused them to dissipate, which is a common occurrence in this type of weather pattern.

-The last time Duluth experienced an above-average temperature was on May 15th, marking an extended period of cooler-than-average conditions.

-It appears that Duluth will experience at least one day of offshore winds this week, specifically on Thursday, which should help raise temperatures into the 70s, even near Lake Superior. However, it seems that an east wind and cooler conditions near the lake return by Friday afternoon and may persist through the weekend.

-Hibbing, Minnesota has had 9 days this month with temperatures below 30 degrees. Typically, there are 5 days in May with such lows, and the highest recorded was 14 days in May 2002.

-There has been only one day with thunder in Duluth this month, it’s unlikely there will be any additional occurrences before the month ends. In comparison, April experienced more thunderstorm days, with a total of two.

-Isolated showers are expected in the Northland this evening, and again on Wednesday and Thursday, but Duluth likely won’t see much rain in the coming days.

-There is a possibility of a more active weather pattern next week, potentially bringing several opportunities for showers and thunderstorms to the Northland. However, with it being several days away, changes in the computer models remain a distinct possibility.

The weather pattern remains stagnant.

A large upper low-pressure system is moving over the upper Midwest today, but it will start moving further south and east by the end of the week.
